Me Before You is a book written by Jojo Moyes that tells the story of quadriplegic William Traynor and his caregiver Louisa Clark.  The book has been made into a movie which comes to theatres on June 3rd.  I was blessed to get to attend a book signing of Me Before You at The Grove in Los Angeles.  After the signing I got to see an advanced screening of Me Before You which was introduced by Jojo & Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke who plays Louisa.  I promise that this a spoiler free post.

The book signing for Me Before You was held at Barnes and Noble.  When Jojo arrived she spoke briefly about the movie, which is wrote the screenplay for, before showing us a trailer of the movie.  She mentioned that Neville Longbottom (Matthew Lewis) from Harry Potter was in the movie and that every day that he came to set in workout attire it was a good day for the ladies.  I was pleased to hear her say that she made the screenplay as faithful to the book as she could.  She also shared that she cries every time she watches the movie even though she knows what is going to happen.  Next we watched a trailer which made me even more excited about seeing the movie after the signing.

Jojo Moyes

Jojo Moyes author of Me Before You

Once the trailer was over Jojo took questions from the audience.  Having read the book over the weekend I was very excited to meet Jojo and hear her discuss the book.   It was wonderful to hear how Jojo got the inspiration to write the book.  I would share that information with you but it has the potential to be a spoiler for those unfamiliar with the story.  She did share that when she pitched the story to publishers they responded with “that sounds interesting, who’s gonna read that?”  Well more than six million people have read the book so far and I am glad that someone was willing to put her book out in the world.

Someone asked if she had advice for aspiring writers and I found what she said very encouraging.  The first thing she said was to make time to write at least 500 words everyday.  She also shared that she wrote three books before she got one published and had written eight books before one became a best seller.  My hope is that this will serve as some inspiration and encouragement for the writers who read this.  For those who have read the book or have seen the trailer you might have wondered where the idea for bumblebee tights came from.  Jojo had a pair when she was little and loved them so she added them to the story not knowing that people would love it and want a pair of their own.  The q&a portion of the book signing was really lovely as Jojo was willing to share a lot of information.  When I spoke to her as she was autographing the book I thanked her for writing such a wonderful book and she thanked me for reading it.

Not only do I want you all to read the book and see the movie I want to give you the chance to read it for free.  One lucky reader will win this autographed copy of Me Before You.

The screening was held at the Pacific Theatres at The Grove right by Barnes and Noble.  I was so happy that they made sure that there was enough time between the signing and the screening that fans could attend both.  The small box I’m holding in my hand next to the book was a customized tissue box that they gave to everyone attending the movie.  The tissue box was a special touch and was something that a lot of us needed during the movie.  This is a warning that you might want to consider bringing tissues with you if you go and see it.

Emilia Clarke & Jojo Moyes

Jojo and Emilia Clarke came to introduce the movie.  They were so adorable together and were both so proud of the movie.  Even though I did not get to meet Emilia it was great to see her in person.  Plus, it is pretty cool when the star of the movie comes to introduce it.  I really enjoyed the movie and to be honest I liked it better than the book which is very rare for me.  Just like with an movie based off of a book there are a few differences but they are minor.  If you haven’t seen actor Sam Claflin before in either The Hunger Games movies or the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean you are in for a treat.  He is so fantastic to watch and his smile will melt your heart.  I highly encourage you to both read the book and see the movie.  I give this movie 4.5 out of 5 stars.

I found out about the book signing through the Barnes and Noble website.  I was able to get free tickets to the advanced screening through twitter.  If you would like to find out about future movie screenings be sure to follow me on twitter where I share the links to get tickets.  You can also check out my blog post on How to See Movies For Free.  I would love for you to get to attend events like this in the future.

Are you looking forward to seeing Me Before You when it comes to theaters?

I’m definetely a read the book before I see the movie type of girl. So my plan was to buy and read the book before it hits theaters. All of the trailers have really made me excited to see the movie and come prepared with tissues. AdvancedScreenings offered a screening for this movie, but I didn’t see the email in time and only got on the wait list.

How fun was that? I’m really looking forward to the movie! I loved getting a package from Warner Bros. with the book, an embroidered hanky, bumble bee tights, and music on a USB.

Wow, what a neat overall experience! To say that I’m jealous would be the understatement of the century. Louisa Clark is one of my all-time favorite literary characters, and I am so thrilled to see her be brought to life on the silver screen; the fact that Emilia Clarke is portraying her is a bonus – I’ve always thought that she was a class-act and your post just further proves that. Thanks for sharing your experience with the rest of us!
